Resignation period for local election candidacy has ended

The resignation period for public officials wishing to run in the local government elections to be held on March 31 ended at 5:00 PM.

In the decision of the Supreme Election Council (YSK) published in the Official Gazette on October 27, it was determined that the start date for the election to be held on Sunday, March 31, 2024, was January 1, 2024, and that those wishing to become candidates were required to resign from their positions by 5:00 PM on December 1.

In this context, public officials, members of the judiciary, provincial and district officials of political parties, members of the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK), as well as those serving on the boards of directors and supervisory boards of professional organizations with the status of public institutions, trade unions, public banks, supreme unions and their parent organizations, and the enterprises or partnerships in which they participate, were required to resign.

According to legal regulations, for public officials, submitting a resignation or retirement petition by the specified date is considered as leaving the post.

THOSE NOT REQUIRED TO RESIGN

According to decisions made by the YSK in previous years, some individuals are not required to leave their posts to become candidates.

Accordingly, deputy mayors appointed from among municipal council members will be able to run for office without resigning from these positions. Members of parliament, mayors, provincial general assembly members, municipal council members, and village heads (muhtars) are also not required to resign to file their candidacy or to be nominated.

Members of parliament who become candidates will have to choose which position they will hold within 15 days after being elected as mayor; otherwise, they will be deemed to have rejected the newly elected position.
