In the election at the 38th Ordinary Congress of the Republican People's Party (CHP), Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu and Özgür Özel competed.
The election went to a second round. In the second round, Özgür Özel, who received 812 votes, became the 8th chairman of the CHP.
ERDOĞAN TARGETED ÖZEL
Speaking about this change in the CHP, Erdoğan had said, "To whom did 'Bye-bye Kemal' say 'bye-bye'? He said 'bye-bye' to the terrorist leader Demirtaş in Edirne and to Kavala. The person who won also sent greetings to Demirtaş and Kavala. Six of one, half a dozen of the other. There is no difference between them. They walked shoulder to shoulder with terrorist organizations. You lost 12-13 elections, you were always with them. The winner, you were also with them."
RESPONSE FROM ÖZÇAĞDAŞ
CHP Istanbul Deputy Suat Özçağdaş responded to these words of Erdoğan as follows:
''The CHP is a party that decided many years ago that it is 'left-of-center' and that it is a part of the Socialist International. The CHP will insist on 'peace' and insist on 'brotherhood.' Erdoğan's language is a poisonous language. We have no business with that language. Tayyip Erdoğan will not determine our course of action either. Days full of nightmares will begin for Tayyip Erdoğan. From now on, he will not see a CHP that acts within the ideological political line he has drawn."
