The statements made by former Capital Markets Board (CMB) Chairman İbrahim Ömer Gönül, who was summoned to testify as a suspect within the scope of a fund investigation, regarding extraordinary surges in stock prices have sparked public debate.
During his testimony, Gönül was asked how an approximately 1000-fold increase in a stock could escape CMB oversight and why allegations of manipulation linked to funds could not be detected earlier.
The former CMB Chairman argued that sharp increases in stock prices cannot be classified as manipulation on their own. Gönül stated, "If the public shows favor and there is a rush into a stock, we cannot immediately classify it as 'manipulation'."
Gönül further stated that such transactions must be investigated and evidenced, noting that the process cannot be completed in a short time. Gönül said, "We need to investigate and provide evidence for this. This does not happen overnight. It takes an average of three to four months."
While the remarks became a trending topic on social media, a sharp reaction came from former AKP deputy Şamil Tayyar. Quoting the post containing Gönül's words, Tayyar said, "He can still mock us even in this state. I am speaking metaphorically. You should take this one and give him a good beating."
