In the Foça district of İzmir, Mayor Saniye Bora Fıçı's decision to leave the CHP and join the AKP has triggered protests in the district. Citizens, expressing their reaction to Fıçı, who was elected under the CHP banner in the last local elections, gathered in the square to criticize the decision.
During the protest, Fıçı's party switch was protested with fake dollars. While district residents argued that the mayor acted against the will of the voters, they also voiced their dissatisfaction regarding municipal services in Foça.
One citizen, stating that they are against mayors who change parties, said, "Honestly, I am against these party changes. This is an insult to the voters who elected you. She was elected from the CHP, the CHP voters elected her. The AKP voters did not elect her. We had voted for the CHP, for Saniye, in the elections."
Ahmet Bilgin, one of the district residents, also reacted to the decision Fıçı made after being elected. Bilgin stated, "She came and won with the votes we gave. She has sold our votes. She isn't doing any work in Foça anyway. The lower parts are full of filth, there is no maintenance. We are not satisfied. I don't want to see or hear from a mayor who changes parties at all."
Sadık İrim, who said he was born and raised in Foça, stated that he voted for the CHP in the last election and that he could not accept the mayor moving to another party. İrim said, "How does this happen, I couldn't understand. Such a thing cannot be. Such a thing does not suit a mayor."
Another citizen, a retiree from the Foça Municipality, drew attention to the lack of infrastructure and social facilities in the district. The citizen, stating that problems such as parking, toilets, and the marketplace persist, expressed their reaction with the words, "Nothing has been done for Foça, not even a nail has been driven."
Fıçı's transition to the AKP has become a focal point of criticism in the district, not only as a debate over political preference but also over local government services.
