The detention of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu at his home this morning has caused a stir in Ankara politics. While CHP deputies protested the decision from the podium in the TBMM General Assembly, a reaction also came from the DEM Party front.

''WHEN YOU FACE THE PUBLIC...''

Speaking in Parliament, Deputy Speaker of the TBMM and DEM Party MP Sırrı Süreyya Önder reacted to the interventions made in the field of democratic politics. Önder stated the following:

“No intervention in the field of democratic politics has ever benefited those who carried it out or those who encouraged it in our recent political history. Such engineering efforts may seem rational at the desk; however, they produce irrational results when faced with the public.

Where I stand is in favor of the expansion and liberation of the democratic nature of the Republic. It is not possible for me to approve of or remain silent about any intervention directed at this.

I invite everyone, especially the ruling power, to contribute to the functioning of democratic politics within its own course, rather than through external interventions.”

STERN STATEMENT FROM DEM PARTY

The DEM Party Istanbul Provincial Organization also issued a written statement regarding İmamoğlu and the individuals detained alongside him. The statement emphasized that the operations were not accepted and included the following views:

“We reject these operations targeting the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor, district mayors, journalists, and politicians. We stand against this attitude toward the democratic will of the people today, just as we did yesterday.”

The statement also included a call for participation in the Newroz rally to be held in Yenikapı on Sunday, March 23. The DEM Party gave the following message:

“Newroz is a gathering where the people claim their will and their future. From Van to Istanbul, we invite everyone to come together in Yenikapı to protect democracy, peace, and the right to vote and be elected. Let us raise a powerful cry for democracy together on March 23 to protect the democratic will of the people of Istanbul.”
