The election for acting mayor, held after Menderes Mayor İlkay Çiçek was arrested as part of an investigation conducted by the İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, has brought internal debates within the CHP to the surface. Following the victory of AKP candidate Asuman Şen in the election, CHP Party Spokesperson Müslim Sarı issued a written statement.

Sarı stated that the CHP Headquarters had instructed council members to support the Yeni Party candidate to prevent the Menderes Municipality from passing to the AKP. Sarı announced that a party disciplinary process is being evaluated for the CHP municipal council members who did not comply with this instruction.

In his statement, Sarı expressed that they had been seeking dialogue and consensus with the council members who left the party for over a week, noting that Yeni Party officials and council members rejected their consensus requests and fielded their own candidate in the election.

Placing the responsibility for the AKP candidate's victory on the Yeni Party, Sarı used the phrase, "Yeni Party officials who did not accept a CHP municipality remaining under CHP control, who divided the CHP, and who managed the process poorly by relying on their numerical majority."
