Step back in the 11th Judicial Package: Flash development regarding earthquake offenders

The scope of the execution regulation regarding the Covid-19 period was expanded with the 11th Judicial Package. It was reported that approximately 90 thousand detainees and convicts would be released under this regulation. Although the government stated that the regulation was not an "amnesty," it was evaluated by the public as a "covert amnesty."

EARTHQUAKE CASES DREW REACTION

Information that the regulation would also cover those responsible for the buildings destroyed in the February 6 earthquakes caused reactions. Relatives of those who lost their lives in the earthquakes, where more than 50 thousand people died according to official data, started a protest in Ankara against the possibility of those being tried in earthquake cases being released.

FAMILIES KEPT WATCH IN ANKARA

Earthquake survivor families kept watch for three days at Cemal Süreya Park, which is about 15 minutes away from the TBMM Dikmen Gate. The families called on the authorities with the demand that earthquake offenders should not benefit from the 11th Judicial Package.

STATEMENT CAME FROM AKP

Following the reactions, AKP Group Deputy Chairman Abdullah Güler announced that a special regulation would be made so that earthquake offenders would not be included in the scope of the execution regulation. Thus, it was reported that those being tried in earthquake cases would not be able to benefit from the 11th Judicial Package.

Earthquake survivor relatives, who kept a justice watch at Cemal Süreya Park, also voiced their demands at the CHP Group Meeting. During the speech of CHP Chairman Özgür Özel, the families chanted slogans such as "Is there anyone who hears our voice," "We want justice," and "We want our rights."
