The Republican People's Party (CHP) held its highly anticipated 38th Ordinary Convention, where the candidate of the change-makers, Özgür Özel, won the chairmanship election.
In the first round of the chairmanship elections held at the convention, which began yesterday, neither candidate was able to secure an absolute majority. While Özgür Özel received 682 votes, falling just 2 votes short of the absolute majority threshold, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu received 664 votes. In the second round of the elections, Özgür Özel increased his vote count by 130 to secure the chairmanship with 812 votes, while Kılıçdaroğlu's count dropped to 536.
During the second round of voting, claims were made that Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu would withdraw. However, it was learned that these claims were unfounded.
WHY DID KILIÇDAROĞLU NOT WITHDRAW?
New details regarding the convention, which lasted until late at night, have begun to emerge.
Adana Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Zeydan Karalar, who supported Kılıçdaroğlu, answered journalists' questions yesterday before the results of the second round were finalized. Confirming that the issue of withdrawal was discussed, Karalar said, “They discussed it, but I don't know what the result was. But ultimately, since the election had already started, it had no meaning.”

‘SOME NAMES PERSUADED HIM NOT TO WITHDRAW’
Journalist Altan Sancar, in a message shared on his X account, claimed that Kılıçdaroğlu was persuaded not to withdraw.
Sharing the information he obtained regarding the details of the matter, Sancar said, “The incident of Kılıçdaroğlu's withdrawal last night has also been clarified. Before the second round of voting even began, Kılıçdaroğlu decided to withdraw, and even to come to the hall, take the stage with Özgür Özel, and raise his hand. He communicated this view. However, for some reason, several deputy chairmen and some MPs began to strongly object, arguing that this would not be the right thing to do. During this time, Kılıçdaroğlu changed his mind twice, and in the end, he cast his vote in the hall and left quickly.”

Providing further accounts regarding the message in which Kılıçdaroğlu congratulated Özgür Özel, Sancar stated, “Ultimately, due to the intervention of some names and their own self-interest, Kılıçdaroğlu could only congratulate Özel via his X account. Moreover, while these withdrawal processes were taking place, some of the deputy chairmen were not even answering each other's phone calls.”
‘HE HAD DEFINITELY SHARED HIS DECISION TO WITHDRAW’
Journalist Mehmet Akif Ersoy from Habertürk also stated that Kılıçdaroğlu had made the decision to withdraw but was persuaded to change his mind.
In a message shared on his X account, Ersoy used the following expressions:
“Kılıçdaroğlu had definitely shared his decision to withdraw with his team in his room at the hall.
Subsequently, about 25-30 people said, ‘If we lose, we will lose with our honor; you cannot withdraw. Haven't you taught us for 12 years to say, “I will not turn back from my path”?’ Even an earthquake survivor came and said, ‘You cannot decide this, especially when we came here to support you,’ etc.
He was persuaded and went out to vote again.”
