Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu will give a statement today at the Istanbul Courthouse in Çağlayan at the terrorism crimes investigation bureau as part of two separate investigations. Ankara Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Mansur Yavaş also arrived at the Istanbul Courthouse to support İmamoğlu.
İMAMOĞLU AT THE COURTHOUSE
An investigation was launched against Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu for the crimes of 'Threatening' and 'Targeting individuals fighting against terrorism' due to the remarks he made about Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor Akın Gürlek and his family during a program he attended on January 20. On January 27, an ex officio investigation was launched against İmamoğlu for the crimes of 'Attempting to influence a person performing a judicial duty, an expert witness, or a witness' and 'Attempting to influence a fair trial' because he explicitly named an expert witness involved in public cases during his speech. İmamoğlu, who arrived at the Istanbul Palace of Justice today to give his statement, did not make a statement to journalists at the entrance.
"MORE RULE OF LAW MEANS..."
Mansur Yavaş, who arrived at the courthouse, stated, "I do not think there is anything that requires a lawsuit to be filed against İmamoğlu. I hope that from now on, the law will be as it should be, because for our country, it is not necessary for the law to give or receive the impression that it is taking instructions from politicians; it should not give that impression either. It shakes confidence in the law in the country. It also cuts off investments that will come to the country. More rule of law means more democracy, more bread, and more jobs. But the weaker the law becomes, both the economy collapses and all our values are trampled underfoot. I hope we will all reach the days when the law functions fully and the separation of powers functions in its true sense. I offer my respects to you all..."
"WE ALSO KNOW THOSE TIMES"
Upon the reporter's remark, "This investigation was actually launched due to both the words he said about the expert witness and the words he said about the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office. I would like you to evaluate these words," Mansur Yavaş said the following: "Legal experts will evaluate that. That is, they will evaluate what it means. Because we know the times in this country when no one listened to court decisions, even during a trial or after a court decision was rendered."
CROWD AROUND THE COURTHOUSE
While party members formed a crowd around the courthouse, police vehicles and water cannon trucks (TOMA) were present in the square. Armored vehicles were also kept waiting in the C block section. It was observed that police teams were patrolling in front of the courthouse.
