AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced his party's mayoral candidates for 26 provinces at the candidate introduction launch held at the Haliç Congress Center on January 7. While Murat Kurum was nominated in Istanbul, eyes have turned to January 15 for the İzmir and Ankara candidates.
According to a report by Selda Güneysu from Cumhuriyet, it is stated that the candidacy of Keçiören Mayor Turgut Altınok for Ankara and AKP Deputy Chairman Hamza Dağ for the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality has been finalized.
It is considered certain that Veysel Tiryaki, who served as mayor of Ankara's Altındağ district for three terms and was appointed Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Forestry on April 7, will be announced as the mayoral candidate for Bolu. The AKP also made a last-minute "candidate change" for the Adana Metropolitan Municipality, deciding on the current Yüreğir Mayor Fatih Mehmet Kocaispir. Erdoğan also decided to "continue the path" with Ekrem Yüce in Sakarya.
The report also claims that Erdoğan has "held accountable" the mayors of provinces affected by the February 6 earthquakes. It is stated that the current AKP provincial chairman Fırat Görgel will be announced in place of the current metropolitan mayor Hayrettin Güngör in Kahramanmaraş. In Hatay, the current AKP provincial chairman Mehmet Öntürk will be nominated. It is also considered certain that the AKP will enter the elections with Şerif Aydın in Diyarbakır, Sami Er in Malatya, Kars Governor Ziya Polat in Adıyaman, Mehmet Canpolat in Şanlıurfa, Feryat Asya in Muş, Abbas Aydın in Ağrı, Halil İbrahim Aşgın in Çorum, Yusuf Özgün in Gümüşhane, Mustafa Yaman in Bilecik, and Bahattin Akgün in Kırıkkale.
