The toughest election in 25 years in İzmir: 'The ruling party has never been this close to winning'

Ümit Yaldız, General Coordinator of the Integral Public Opinion Research Company, evaluated the election agenda in the city. 

Integral Public Opinion Research Company conducted a survey in İzmir between February 6 and 12.

The research, carried out via the computer-assisted telephone interviewing (CATI) method with a total of 1,648 participants in 16 districts of İzmir, was based on 2022 TUIK data.

Evaluating the study results for Gazete Duvar with Nuray Pehlivan, the company's General Coordinator, journalist Ümit Yaldız, stated that they reached data indicating that the election race will be neck-and-neck in İzmir, which has been considered a stronghold of the CHP for 25 years.

Yaldız said the following regarding the possibility of the People's Alliance winning:

50 PERCENT OF THE MASSES IN THE POLLS SAID "MAYBE" 

“The People's Alliance has never been this close to winning İzmir! Moreover, the probability of this being possible has never been measured this high in terms of percentage. When we asked this question to the people of İzmir, we determined that 42 percent of the segment sees this possibility as 'quite remote.' But a mass reaching 50 percent, even if the majority answered 'maybe,' shows that they do not see this possibility as very remote either” 

THE TOUGHEST ELECTION IN 25 YEARS

Yaldız assessed, “While the candidate preferences of the CHP, which sees İzmir as its stronghold, are being questioned both in public opinion and within the party organization, there is no trace of these discussions on the ground of the People's Alliance. Dissenting voices in a few districts were not allowed to go beyond the organization. In a sense, the arm is broken but stays within the sleeve. The disapproval of CHP candidates strengthens the feeling of settling scores with the CHP among CHP members in many districts. For all these reasons, we can easily say that the CHP is preparing for the toughest election of the last 25 years in İzmir.”

Yaldız said, “Our research, which we conducted with approximately 1,700 people in 16 districts of İzmir between February 6 and 12, also reveals that the reason for the high indecision at the Metropolitan scale is these feelings.”
