Derince Mayor Sertif Gökçe of Kocaeli has announced his resignation from the Republican People's Party (CHP). It was reported that along with Gökçe, 18 municipal council members have also left the CHP to join the NEW Party, which was founded under the leadership of Özgür Özel.
In a written statement, Gökçe noted that he became a member of the CHP in 1999 and stated that he entered politics not for personal positions or titles, but to serve the country and the nation.
In his statement, Gökçe said, "I have believed that fighting during difficult times and standing by the cause one believes in is an honorable stance."
Recalling that he served in various levels within the party, from youth branches to district and provincial administrations, Gökçe said he was proud to serve the public as the Mayor of Derince.
Explaining his resignation decision based on "conscientious and political responsibility," Gökçe argued that there is a need for a new political understanding in the face of the economic, social, and political landscape Turkey is currently in.
Gökçe stated, "I believe that in the face of the severe economic, social, and political landscape our country is in, there is a need for a new understanding, a new excitement, and a political movement that will give hope to society once again."
Sharing his departure from CHP membership with the public, Gökçe conveyed his respect and gratitude to the party he had dedicated many years of effort to while announcing his decision.
