The Istanbul Büyükçekmece Municipality has been in the spotlight in recent weeks due to a series of arrests. First, Ahmet Şahin was elected as acting mayor in an election held on June 11 to replace Mayor Hasan Akgün, who was arrested on June 5 as part of an ongoing investigation.
However, after Şahin was also arrested on July 8 as part of the same investigation, a vacancy emerged once again in the municipal administration.
Following these developments, the Municipal Council reconvened today. On the agenda this time was the election of the third acting mayor for the Büyükçekmece Municipality.
CHP'S HAKAN ÇEBİ ELECTED
In the vote held at the Municipal Council, CHP candidate Hakan Çebi was elected acting mayor by a majority vote. Thus, the administration of the Büyükçekmece Municipality has changed for the third time in the last month and a half.
In his speech at the council, Çebi said, "As I take over this duty, our priority is to ensure that the public does not suffer and that municipal services continue without interruption. I hope that justice will be served as soon as possible and that the innocence of our colleagues will be revealed."
