Trump commutes sentence of former congressman convicted of fraud

U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he has commuted the sentence of former Congressman George Santos, who was sentenced to 7 years and 3 months in prison for fraud. Trump stated that he has signed the necessary documents for Santos's immediate release.

In a statement on the Truth Social platform, Trump described Santos as a "scoundrel" but added, "There are many criminals in our country who do not have to serve seven years in prison." Noting that Santos had been held in solitary confinement for a long time, Trump wished him well.

George Santos was elected to the House of Representatives from New York in 2022. However, he soon faced charges of fraud and money laundering. Santos had refused to resign from his post, characterizing the 23-count indictment as a "witch hunt." After being expelled from Congress at the end of 2023 due to ethics violations, Santos was subsequently sentenced to 7 years and 3 months in prison.
