Trump extends deadline for TikTok by another 90 days

US President Donald Trump stated in a post on Truth Social that he has extended the deadline for TikTok to be sold to a US company by another 90 days. Trump said, "I have signed an Executive Order that will extend the closing date for TikTok until September 17, 2025."

Trump had previously taken a similar decision on April 4, granting TikTok a 75-day extension and expressing his support for keeping the app operational.

TIKTOK'S FUTURE IN THE US

TikTok faces the risk of being banned in the US unless it is sold to an American firm. On January 19, the app was shut down under this law but was reopened on the same day. On his first day in office, Trump signed an executive order suspending the implementation of this law for 75 days.

Trump stated that he does not want TikTok to be banned, but that for the ban to be lifted, 50 percent of the application must be transferred to a US company. He said, "We have the right to sell or shut down TikTok. We will decide that. China's approval is also required, but I am sure they will give it. If they don't, we will impose tariffs on China."

Furthermore, Trump, who indicated that he could extend the deadline if no agreement is reached for TikTok to be purchased by a US firm, hinted that he could offer tariff reductions to the Beijing administration in exchange for China's approval of this acquisition.
