Emir said, “Two years ago, they passed a censorship law under the name of a disinformation law and defined a crime called publicly spreading misleading information to the public.
The AKP, the Palace, and the prosecutors under their control were to decide what the truth is. And with this law, they are dangling the Sword of Damocles over journalists, scientists, and civil society organizations.”
In a video statement, Emir noted the following:
"Two years ago, they passed a censorship law under the name of a disinformation law and defined a crime called publicly spreading misleading information to the public. The AKP, the Palace, and the prosecutors under their control were to decide what the truth is. With this law, they are dangling the Sword of Damocles over journalists, scientists, and civil society organizations. They most recently used it against TÜSİAD presidents. Saying ‘the economy is getting worse’ or ‘if the rule of law is not strengthened, the economy will collapse’ was considered a crime.
"THEY ARE TRYING TO INTIMIDATE"
Journalist Özlem Gürses was punished on the grounds of spreading disinformation. Finally, Nasuh Mahruki was also penalized for publicly spreading misleading information to the public. It is such a law that it has turned into a master key in the hands of prosecutors that they can use whenever they wish, open any door they want, and throw anyone they want into prison whenever they choose. In this way, they are spreading fear to society through symbolic figures, they are trying to intimidate, and they are saying, ‘If you do not stay silent, we can throw you into prison at any moment using this law.’”
