AKP deputy Hulki Cevizoğlu had previously made absurd statements regarding the crisis that occurred during the Super Cup Final in Riyadh.

Cevizoğlu had whitewashed the events in Riyadh by using the expressions, "Why don't you wear an Atatürk t-shirt in Turkey, my friend? Is there any need to stir up the nation just to wear an Atatürk t-shirt?"
In a broadcast he attended on Haber Global, Cevizoğlu made further unfortunate remarks, portraying the AKP and Erdoğan as 'Atatürkists in action'.
