Who is Beylikdüzü Mayor Mehmet Murat Çalık, who was transferred to the hospital? What is his health issue?

Beylikdüzü Mayor Mehmet Murat Çalık, who was arrested on March 23, 2025, as part of an investigation into the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB), was first transferred to Silivri Prison and subsequently to İzmir No. 2 F-Type Prison on April 4. 

It is known that Mehmet Murat Çalık has been experiencing health problems for some time. Recently, his lawyer announced that Çalık has overcome cancer twice and has suffered significant weight loss of 15 kilograms while in prison.

The lawyer has also filed an official request for his client's release.

WHO IS MEHMET MURAT ÇALIK?

Born in 1972 in the Maçka district of Trabzon, Mehmet Murat Çalık completed his primary and secondary education in the same region. After completing his high school education at Trabzon High School, Çalık graduated from the Istanbul Technical University (İTÜ) Faculty of Architecture, Department of Urban and Regional Planning, and began his professional career.

Operating in the field of urban planning with the company he founded in 1998, Çalık became one of the well-known names in the sector by undertaking significant projects.

Having taken on roles in many non-governmental organizations for professional and social responsibility projects, Çalık served in various management levels and as vice president at the Chamber of City Planners Istanbul Branch between 2008 and 2014.

Following Ekrem İmamoğlu's election as Mayor of Beylikdüzü, Çalık served as Technical Coordinator and Deputy Mayor in this municipality.

Elected as the Mayor of Beylikdüzü in the 2019 local elections, Mehmet Murat Çalık is married and a father of two. His wife is Zehra Evin Çalık.
