The anatomy of a culture of violence: The murder of Ata Emre Akman

The brutal murder of 20-year-old Ata Emre Akman, who worked as a motorcycle courier in Balıkesir, has exposed the extent of the culture of violence in the country.

IT WAS REVEALED THAT HE HAD A CRIMINAL RECORD

The detained suspect, E.Ö., who murdered Akman by stabbing him 25 times, stated in his testimony: "I asked him how he knew my father's religious-marriage wife, Sultan Dönmez. He snapped at me. That is why I stabbed him."

It was revealed that the killer had numerous prior criminal records.

Ata Emre Akman's mother, Zuhal Akman, demanded that the killer's father also be punished:

Because he is the instigator. He is the person who gave his son the go-ahead, saying, 'My child will now do what I could not.'

In recent months, the public agenda has been dominated by a series of murders. Social disintegration and polarization are imposing themselves as a culture of violence. Femicides and the murders of taxi drivers can be cited as examples of this.

INADEQUATE SANCTIONS ENCOURAGE CRIME

On the other hand, the prior criminal records of the killers following these murders have led to questioning of the country's justice system.

Low-level sanctions against violent incidents are paving the way for criminal acts.
