70-million-year-old dinosaur egg discovered in Argentina

It is believed that this dinosaur egg discovered in Patagonia may belong to the Bonapartenykus genus, a small carnivorous theropod that lived during the late Cretaceous period. The fact that this fossil, which draws attention with its resemblance to an ostrich egg, is so well-preserved has astonished scientists.

Scientists state that there may be embryonic material inside the egg. This situation further increases the scientific value of the fossil. Detailed examinations will be conducted to determine the contents of the egg.

Gonzalo Muñoz from the Argentine Museum of Natural Sciences stated that this discovery was a great surprise for them. Emphasizing that carnivorous dinosaur eggs are rarely found, Muñoz said, "While finding dinosaur fossils is common, finding an egg is much less frequent."

Muñoz explained the reasons for this rarity as follows: "The number of carnivores is lower than that of herbivores. Furthermore, since carnivorous dinosaurs are the ancestors of birds, their eggs are more similar to those of birds; that is, they have thinner shells and are more fragile. This makes their preservation difficult."

For this reason, the integrity of the egg found makes it scientifically unique. The other fossils found in the region along with the egg will be sent to the Argentine Museum of Natural Sciences to undergo detailed analysis.
