A move for a new type of antibiotic against drug-resistant bacteria

Scientists have identified a new type of antibiotic with the potential to eliminate the bacterium "Acinetobacter baumannii," which is known for the deadly infections it causes and is among the pathogens that possess antibiotic resistance.

According to a report by CNN, researchers from Harvard University and the Swiss pharmaceutical company Hoffmann-La Roche examined approximately 45 thousand antibiotic molecules to find clinical treatment pathways against drug-resistant bacteria that cause fatal infections in the human body.

During this examination, it was observed that an antibiotic type named "Zosurabalpin" largely neutralized the drug-resistant "Acinetobacter baumannii" bacterium in a laboratory setting.

Researchers observed that the antibiotic named "Zosurabalpin" significantly reduced the level of bacteria caused by "Acinetobacter baumannii."

Studies have shown that Zosurabalpin succeeded in combating infections caused by the "Acinetobacter baumannii" bacterium, which is so prevalent worldwide, in more than 100 clinical samples.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the "Acinetobacter baumannii" bacterium, which has high resistance to currently used antibiotic types, causes serious and high-mortality infections in the lungs, urinary tract, and blood.

LIST OF BACTERIA URGENTLY NEEDING NEW ANTIBIOTICS

This type, which is at the top of the World Health Organization's (WHO) list of "bacteria urgently needing new antibiotics," causes approximately 8 thousand 500 infections and 700 deaths in the U.S. each year.

Furthermore, this bacterial type, which is more common in Asia and the Middle East, accounts for 20 percent of infections in intensive care units worldwide.

Developing in medical settings such as hospitals and nursing homes, this type of bacteria affects individuals who are at the highest risk of infection, such as those connected to ventilators or those with open wounds due to surgery.

Dr. Kenneth Bradley stated that Zosurabalpin creates a formidable barrier.

The results of the research were published in the journal "Nature."
