A striking development ahead of the Artemis program: Two astronauts stranded on the space station

The Starliner spacecraft, launched by Boeing from Florida on June 5, 2024, has been docked at the Station for over three weeks. As NASA and Boeing engineers work to resolve issues, the mission duration for the astronauts, who were scheduled to return on June 14, has been extended "indefinitely."

"On June 5, 2024, as the golden rays of the sun hit the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, hopes were rising to the sky along with Boeing's Starliner spacecraft launched from Florida. Two astronauts named Barry 'Butch' Wilmore and Sunita Williams set off for the International Space Station for the first crewed flight of the Boeing Starliner. Of course, at that time, they were completely unaware that the return journey would be much more uncertain.

Starliner has been docked at the Station for more than three weeks and has encountered numerous mechanical issues that have delayed the astronauts' return. These challenges are raising concerns worldwide about the safety and reliability of Starliner.

Since docking at the Station, the spacecraft has faced a series of problems, such as helium leaks and thruster issues. While NASA and Boeing engineers are working to solve the problems one by one, the mission duration of the astronauts, who were originally scheduled to return on June 14, has been extended 'indefinitely.'

Although nothing but trouble has been experienced on the journey so far, Steve Stich, manager of NASA's Commercial Crew Program, stubbornly points out that Wilmore and Williams are 'not stranded in space.' Of course, despite the assurances of officials, the delay in the two astronauts' return to Earth inevitably leads to a focus on a 'stranded' scenario."

'HANGING BY A THREAD...'

Bakırcı also pointed out that the astronauts have accepted the situation and drew attention to the Artemis project, which aims to send human colonies to the Moon, stating the following:

"Wilmore and Williams, both experienced astronauts, have already accepted the situation: During the mission, which is clearly going to take much longer than expected, they are assisting with research and routine activities on the Station. Former NASA astronaut Leroy Chiao emphasizes that both astronauts could stay on the ISS almost indefinitely if necessary, and therefore they are not in any danger. So, while it sounds terrible, they are not actually in a serious danger scenario.

But for Boeing, the stakes are particularly high. The delays and malfunctions are jeopardizing the perception of their capabilities in the space industry, a sector where reliability is extremely important. Future missions, including potential roles in NASA's Artemis program, which aims to take permanent human colonies to the Moon, are hanging by a thread depending on Starliner's performance and the lessons learned from this mission.

Currently, NASA and Boeing, who are trying to resolve the most urgent concerns regarding Starliner's return, are focusing on comprehensive testing and ensuring all issues are resolved before making a final decision on the return; therefore, the team has not yet set a fixed return date. NASA's Stich states that they are taking extra time to review all the data and learn as much as they can while the service module is still in orbit. In other words, the delay is actually being managed in a controlled and desired manner."
