Scientists have developed an innovative energy solution capable of generating electricity by utilizing the temperature difference between the night and space. This technology, called a "night sky battery," offers an alternative for energy needs during hours when there is no sunlight.

Developed through a joint effort by researchers from Stanford University and UCLA, the system aims to make life easier, especially in regions with underdeveloped infrastructure or limited access to electricity. Materials engineer Aaswath Raman, who participated in the study, emphasized that the system could provide an effective solution for places with low energy requirements.

At night, the Earth's surface loses more heat to space compared to the daytime. The temperature difference that occurs during this process is based on a physical phenomenon known as "radiative cooling." The device developed by the researchers uses this temperature difference to generate electricity through thermoelectric generators. It is stated that the prototype currently provides enough energy to power a few LED lamps.

This new method aims to complement the shortcomings of existing solar panels rather than replace them. According to experts, it could offer significant advantages, especially for sensors that operate at night, small-scale electronic devices, weather monitoring stations, or emergency lighting.

Additionally, the fact that the system is largely constructed from low-cost materials increases its potential for widespread application. The prototype models utilized aluminum surfaces, thermoelectric modules, and insulation materials that minimize heat loss. It is stated that the next phase involves the development of new-generation devices that produce more energy.

It is stated that the developed technology has the potential to be a groundbreaking alternative for energy access in off-grid locations. Scientists agree that night-sourced renewable energy products will be more integrated into our daily lives in the coming years.
