AI move from the EU: Tender process begins for up to 7 giga-factories across Europe

The European Union has taken a new infrastructure step to increase its competitiveness in the field of artificial intelligence and strengthen its technological independence. The European Commission has announced that the tender process has been launched for the establishment of up to 7 AI giga-factories across Europe.

According to the Commission's statement, the initiative will be industry-led and supported by up to 10 billion euros in funding from EU and national sources. This framework is expected to mobilize at least 20 billion euros in private investment across the Union.

The planned AI giga-factories aim to provide access to high-capacity computing infrastructure for startups, growth-stage companies, SMEs, industrial organizations, academia, and public institutions. This infrastructure is intended to be used particularly for the training and development of advanced AI models.

GOAL: STRATEGIC AUTONOMY

The European Commission stated that the facilities to be established will bring together advanced AI processors, software and cloud technologies, high-speed connectivity infrastructure, and energy-efficient data centers. The giga-factories are planned to work in conjunction with a network of 19 AI factories to be established across Europe.

The statement emphasized that this structure would strengthen Europe's technological leadership, resilience, and strategic autonomy. The EU aims to reduce its dependence on the US and China in the field of artificial intelligence.

The Commission stated that the initiative will contribute to Europe developing artificial intelligence in line with its own rules and values. The technologies to be developed in the factories are intended to comply with EU standards in the areas of data protection, security, and ethics.
