Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced the development of its first quantum computing chip, named Ocelot, which can reduce quantum error correction costs by 90%. Developed at the AWS Center for Quantum Computing at the California Institute of Technology, this chip offers an advanced architecture that will enhance the ability of quantum computers to solve commercial and scientific problems.

OCELOT: STARTING A NEW ERA IN QUANTUM ERROR CORRECTION

Quantum computers have the potential to revolutionize fields such as cryptography, materials science, and complex simulations compared to classical computers. However, one of the biggest obstacles to this technology is that qubits are rapidly affected by environmental factors, leading to increased error rates. During the development of Ocelot, AWS prioritized quantum error correction from the ground up, succeeding in building a scalable and efficient system.

The cat qubit technology developed by AWS makes it possible to perform error correction operations with fewer resources by preventing specific types of errors. Ocelot optimizes error correction processes by using 5 to 10 times fewer resources compared to traditional methods.

AWS believes that Ocelot has the potential to accelerate the transition process for practical quantum computers. However, this chip is still in the laboratory prototype stage and requires several stages of improvement for a full-scale quantum computer.
