Apple acknowledges overheating issue in iPhone 15 models

Apple has acknowledged the overheating issue in its newly released iPhone 15 Pro model. In a statement from the company, it was noted that a new software update is being worked on to resolve this problem, while pointing out that third-party applications such as Instagram and Spotify are contributing to the overheating.

Over the past week, a number of iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro users have complained about their new devices overheating and operating at abnormally high temperatures. In response to these complaints, Apple announced that a new iOS update is on the way to address the issues.


UPDATE WILL NOT REDUCE PERFORMANCE

In a statement to 9to5Mac, Apple said that the iPhone 15 Pro's new titanium design is not causing any overheating issues. The company also states that the upcoming software update for iOS 17 will not reduce performance in any way to address temperature concerns on iPhones.

NORMAL FOR A NEW IPHONE TO BE WARM ON THE FIRST DAY

In a statement first sent to Forbes and also shared with 9to5Mac, Apple noted that it is normal for an iPhone to run warmer than usual during the first few days. This is due to iOS indexing photos, searches, and more in the background. Newly set up iPhones pulling large amounts of data via iCloud can cause the phones to overheat during the day.

BUG CAUSING OVERHEATING

Apple also stated that it has identified a bug in iOS 17 that is exacerbating the overheating issue for iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro users. The company noted that this issue "will be addressed in a software update."

INSTAGRAM IS THE CULPRIT ACCORDING TO APPLE

Furthermore, Apple said in its statement that recent updates to some third-party apps have caused them to overload the system. The company noted that it is working directly with these developers to resolve the issues. According to Apple, some of the apps that overload the iPhone's processor and cause the devices to overheat include Asphalt 9, Instagram, and Uber. Apple noted that Instagram released an update for the issue in question on September 27.

IS THE TITANIUM CASING THE CAUSE?

Apple also confirmed that the iPhone 15 Pro's titanium design is not responsible for any overheating issues, contrary to what was stated in some reports earlier this week. The company stated that the new design actually provides better heat dissipation than previous iPhones with stainless steel. This is likely due to the new internal aluminum substructure.

Finally, Apple emphasizes that there is no safety risk for iPhone users and no impact on long-term performance. iOS has an advanced system to prevent overheating. If internal components heat up abnormally, iOS protects these components by attempting to regulate their temperatures.

There is no information on when the new iOS 17 update (likely iOS 17.0.3) expected to fix the overheating issue will be released, but it is expected to be released as soon as possible.

As of now, Apple has released iOS 17, iOS 17.0.1, and iOS 17.0.2 to users. The company is also continuing beta testing for iOS 17.1, which is expected to be released at the end of October. Forbes specifically notes that iOS 17.1 "will not reduce performance to solve the iPhone's temperature issue."
