Attention those with spare phones: They may be deactivated tomorrow!

With a new regulation developed for technological security, the IMEI numbers of smartphones that have not sent any signals for a calendar year are being suspended as of January 1st. The practice, maintained by the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK), aims to both prevent illegal transactions and keep idle devices from remaining in the system. However, this regulation could also deal a blow to spare phones kept in drawers for a year.

According to analyses, approximately 3 million phones that did not provide a signal or were not used at all throughout 2025 have been identified. In the new year, the IMEI numbers of these devices will not be active, and it will not be possible to make calls, send messages, or use mobile data with these phones. Experts recommend that those who do not want their passive phones to be deactivated should turn on their devices and ensure they receive a signal.

There is another solution for device owners covered by the practice if they wish to continue using their phones. Those who miss the deadline will be able to request that their IMEI numbers be reopened for use by applying through the e-Devlet system. During the application stage, details regarding the phone in question will be requested to be submitted to the authorities. In this way, it is planned to prevent both the use of unregistered devices and potential illegal activities.

Within the scope of the new regulation, it is recommended that users regularly use their devices or turn them on and off in a way that ensures they provide a signal to avoid any grievances. If the date is missed, there is no other way than applying through the e-Devlet portal.
