A comprehensive study led by Prof. Duncan Astle at the University of Cambridge has reached striking conclusions by examining the brain's changing neural connections from infancy to old age. Four main turning points were identified where the brain undergoes significant changes throughout its developmental stages: the ages of 9, 32, 66, and 83.
In his assessment of the subject, Prof. Astle stated, "When we look back on our lives, we all have the feeling that we go through different stages. Now we can scientifically show that our brains also experience these phases." The researchers underscore that the findings offer important clues for understanding the time intervals during which the brain may be vulnerable.
"ADULT BRAIN" BEGINS AT AGE 32
According to scientific analysis, the brain's neural connections in adulthood undergo a fundamental shift around the age of 32, transitioning into an "adult mode," and this structure is maintained for about thirty years. Researchers note that this breaking point coincides with the "plateau period in intelligence and personality" highlighted in previous studies.
The period before age 32, starting from age 9, is the adolescence phase, which witnesses an increasingly growing complexity in brain connections. During these years, the refinement of networks and the efficiency of connections develop, accelerating cognitive performance. Alexa Mousley, one of the lead researchers of the study, emphasizes that the transformation around age 32 may be linked to social events such as parenthood. Furthermore, it is stated that these findings will play a critical role in understanding the origins of mental health issues commonly seen in adolescence.
SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN CHILDHOOD AND OLD AGE
In the early stages of brain development, i.e., childhood, it is observed that up to age 9, unnecessary neural connections are pruned, and gray and white matter develop rapidly. This consolidation process is considered important for preparation for adulthood.
Additionally, the study found that during the Early Old Age period around 66 and the Late Old Age period at 83, the brain's connections decrease and degeneration begins in the white matter. At these ages, it is observed that mental flexibility and memory also begin to decline.
The results of the research provide new reference points in the field of neuroscience by showing that the brain's transformation process continues not only in youth but over a much broader portion of the lifespan.
