The British Army has achieved a major success in its first live-fire test with Raytheon UK’s High-Energy Laser Weapon System (HELWS). In the exercise conducted at the Radnor Range in Wales, soldiers from the Royal Artillery neutralized drones using the HELWS mounted on a Wolfhound armored vehicle.

This test marked an important step as it was the first time the British Army tested a high-energy laser weapon on an armored vehicle, aiming to increase its air defense capacity with this technology.

The HELWS operates by directing an intense beam of energy at a target using advanced sensors and tracking systems. Unlike traditional ammunition systems, this weapon has an unlimited ammunition capacity, making it a cost-effective solution.

Warrant Officer Matthew Anderson, who took part in the exercise, stated that every engagement successfully neutralized a drone, highlighting that this system offers a rapid response, especially against aerial threats. Anderson emphasized that laser weapons could create a significant capability on the battlefield and said, "This is definitely a capability that could be added to our weapons inventory on the battlefield."

Raytheon’s HELWS was developed as part of a joint program conducted between Raytheon UK and Team Hersa. This trial constitutes the latest phase of a series of tests carried out within the framework of the British Ministry of Defence’s land laser-directed energy weapon (LDEW) demonstration program.

The successful results of this test show that laser weapons could play a significant role in future military operations and reshape modern defense systems.
