China could neutralize submarines with its new technology

For decades, nuclear submarines that have been able to lose their tracks meters underwater have played a significant role in the balance of military power. The new high-precision quantum sensors being developed could shift these balances. Research teams in China are preparing this technology for practical use, taking military competition to a new dimension.

Traditional sonar systems relied on the propeller sounds or radar silhouettes of submarines. However, modern submarines today are extremely quiet and are becoming increasingly difficult to detect. Next-generation quantum magnetometers go beyond classical methods; they can record the slightest magnetic changes created by submarines by using the magnetic sensitivity of atoms. These sensors can distinguish signals trillions of times weaker than those detected by ordinary magnets.

Quantum technology does not just measure magnetic fields; gravity sensors are also coming into play. Small gravitational fluctuations created by submarines during their underwater movement can be detected using clouds of atoms that are frozen and monitored in a laboratory. Researchers aim to determine the location of submarines with almost unerring accuracy using this method.

By integrating the ultra-sensitive sensors it has developed into unmanned underwater vehicles and small drones, China is creating its own surveillance network, particularly in regions of high strategic importance such as the South China Sea. This step presents a new security paradigm that challenges the traditional intelligence methods of Western military powers.

According to statements from scientists, in the coming period, submarines will have to carry swarms of signal-jamming drones or try to leave no trace by reducing their size in order to avoid detection. However, the development of quantum-based sensors is making underwater operations transparent in a way never seen before.

Experts state that dominance in the oceans could change with this technological breakthrough and that all strategic plans, from cyber-privacy to classical military engineering, could be reshaped.
