Antimatter consists of particles that are the exact opposite of normal matter in terms of electrical charge. Therefore, when antimatter comes into contact with normal matter, both are annihilated, releasing a massive amount of energy. When antimatter and matter combine, mass is converted directly into energy.
The amount of energy released in this process could be used for space travel. For example, one gram of antimatter could produce an explosion equivalent to a nuclear bomb. This type of energy could transport humans to previously unreachable locations at very high speeds.
The main reason antimatter engines do not yet exist is not due to technological limitations, but rather cost. Gerald Jackson, an accelerator physicist who has worked on antimatter projects at Fermilab, stated that with sufficient funding, we could have an antimatter spacecraft prototype within ten years.
If the cost is met, the basic technology is available, and physicists are using the world's most powerful particle accelerators to produce antiprotons and antihydrogen atoms.
COST IS 62 TRILLION DOLLARS
The current cost of antimatter is approximately 62 trillion dollars, and producing 1 gram of it could take 100 billion years. For this reason, antimatter is considered one of the most expensive substances on Earth. Under current economic conditions, even if all the billionaires in the world came together, they would not be able to afford 1 gram of antimatter.
Jackson, the founder, president, and CEO of Hbar Technologies, is working on the concept of an "antimatter space sail" and stated that this design could be used to travel to stars, planets, or moons.
Weed, the CEO of Positron Dynamics, is working on positrons, which are the antimatter version of the electron. Positrons are thousands of times lighter than antiprotons and produce less energy when they annihilate. Their advantages include the fact that positrons occur naturally and do not require massive accelerators or billions of dollars in costs.
Like all antimatter propulsion designs, these concepts have not yet been realized. Scientists have proposed many different concepts for decades, but none of them have been implemented. For example, in 1953, Austrian physicist Eugen Sänger proposed a "photon rocket" that would use positron annihilation energy. Since the 1980s, there has been talk of thermal antimatter engines that would use antimatter to heat liquid, gas, or plasma.
