Early 2030s targeted for short-haul electric flights in Europe

European startups are aiming for lower-emission travel on short routes using electric aircraft with a range of up to 500 kilometers.

According to a report by Euronews, short-haul electric flights in Europe are expected to begin carrying passengers on some popular routes by the early 2030s. Advances in battery technology, electric motors, and aircraft design have brought electric aviation back to the agenda, which had long been considered difficult due to weight and range limitations.

Carlos López de la Osa, aviation technical manager at the European Federation for Transport and Environment (T&E), states that electric and hybrid flights could play a significant role in making short-haul travel more sustainable and reducing dependence on imported jet fuel.

It is noted that electric aircraft could particularly stand out on routes involving islands, coasts, and water crossings that cannot be easily replaced by trains. Routes such as London-Dublin, Athens-Santorini, Barcelona-Ibiza, Nice-Corsica, and Rome-Sardinia are among the examples cited within the 500-kilometer range target.

500-KILOMETER RANGE TARGET

According to an analysis by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), electric aircraft capable of reaching a range of up to 500 kilometers could serve approximately one-quarter of flight routes in Europe. This could open the door to a new era in short-haul air travel in terms of both fuel costs and emissions.

German startup Vaeridion aims to certify its nine-seater electric aircraft for passenger transport by 2030. The company projects that it could achieve an operating cost of under 0.50 euros per passenger-kilometer in the long term. However, it is emphasized that final ticket prices will depend on airport fees, taxes, and the pricing policies of airlines.

The small capacity of first-generation electric aircraft makes it difficult for these vehicles to compete directly with large commercial jets in the short term. For this reason, electric aircraft are expected to be used initially on rural and regional routes where large airline networks provide limited service.

Dutch company Elysian Aircraft is working on a larger-scale battery-electric aircraft as part of its collaboration with KLM. The company's goal is to develop a model capable of carrying 90 passengers up to 1,000 kilometers as early as 2035.

French company Aura Aero is also conducting a 19-seater hybrid-electric regional aircraft project. The company plans to certify the aircraft, which has a target range of up to 1,500 kilometers, in late 2029. Antoine Toulemont, European affairs advisor at Aura Aero, says that the hybrid system can provide a longer range while reducing emissions by up to 80 percent, and they anticipate a 50 percent reduction in direct operating costs.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT DEPENDS ON THE SOURCE OF ELECTRICITY

Although electric flights eliminate the use of jet fuel during flight, the total climate impact does not depend solely on the aircraft's performance in the air. Experts emphasize that the production of batteries, the manufacturing of parts, and the sources from which the electricity used to charge the aircraft is provided are decisive factors.

Anna Hughes, Director of Flight Free UK, states that electric flights could be part of low-carbon travel, especially on routes that cannot be easily replaced by other modes of transport. However, Hughes points out that these flights can only be considered truly zero-carbon if they are powered solely by renewable energy.

In July, the European Commission also proposed expanding funding for the decarbonization of aviation and directing support toward electric aircraft, in addition to sustainable aviation fuels and hydrogen-powered aircraft.
