According to the latest data from the Turkish Statistical Institute, electricity prices for households increased by 28 percent in the first quarter of the year. Along with the price hikes, applications made by citizens to social media and consumer complaint platforms have reached record levels.
The Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, while recommending that consumers use energy-efficient appliances and practice efficient energy consumption, stated that various incentives could be brought to the agenda to promote individual electricity generation in homes.

Alternative electricity generation has become a viable option in homes, especially with the development of technology in recent years. Solar energy panels are among the most preferred methods.
Photovoltaic systems can generate electricity from sunlight during the day when mounted on a roof. While the investment cost varies between 40,000-90,000 TL at 2025 prices, it can pay for itself within approximately 6-8 years after installation.
Wind turbines are preferred especially in coastal and windy regions. Small-scale turbines with the capacity to meet the needs of an average household can now be purchased with prices starting from 25,000 TL. However, site selection and compliance with regulations are important factors before installation.
Recently, miniature biogas generators have been gaining popularity in Turkey, as they have been globally. These generators, which produce electricity from organic kitchen waste, support ecological living, especially in rural areas. They can be installed with costs starting from approximately 30,000-55,000 TL.
In addition, micro-hydro systems in homes near small water sources make it possible to generate electricity from low-flow water. However, this method can mostly be applied in regions with specific geographical conditions.

Experts state that while initial costs are high, these investments can make a significant contribution to family budgets in the medium term through government support and energy savings achieved in the long term.

The highest efficiency in home-type electricity generation systems is observed in solar energy and wind turbines. According to officials, 40-70% of annual electricity needs can be met with roof-type solar panels. Regular maintenance, panel cleaning, and correct system sizing are key to efficiency.
As of 2025 in Turkey, net metering (selling excess energy to the grid), VAT exemptions, and low-interest loan opportunities are in effect for individual energy producers. However, experts point out that the legislation can be complex at times. Ali Ersoy from the Chamber of Electrical Engineers says, "If the incentives offered by the state are used with proper consultancy and planning, these systems can become attractive for individual investors."
SUCCESSFUL EXAMPLES AND APPLICATIONS FROM AROUND THE WORLD
European countries, especially Germany, Denmark, and the Netherlands, stand out in home electricity generation. In Germany, 40% of households generate their own electricity with solar panels and can sell excess energy to the grid with the feed-in tariff provided by the state. In Denmark, wind turbines can be used collectively among communities and meet a large portion of the country's energy needs.
In the Netherlands, miniature biogas and hydro systems are supported through pilot programs. For Turkey, these models can be a source of inspiration in terms of easily accessible incentive systems, transparent legislation, and social awareness.
Energy experts emphasize that home electricity generation offers great advantages to the household economy in the long run, but one must be careful about the initial investment cost and regular maintenance of the systems. Making net metering and government support simpler and more accessible could accelerate the spread of electricity generation in Turkey.
