Astrophysicist Michael Cretignier from the University of Oxford stated that the confirmation of the planet's existence is a source of great joy.
Initial observations had raised doubts about the planet's existence because the instruments were at their detection limits. However, additional observations made with the European Southern Observatory's ESPRESSO instrument confirmed the existence of HD 20794 d.
The planet's orbit lasts 648 days and it is largely located within the habitable zone. However, the elliptical nature of its orbit increases the risk of water freezing.
HD 20794 is a star similar to the Sun but smaller and older. This suggests that the planet's orbit may have remained stable for a long time. The existence of three planets around this star was announced in 2011, but it was difficult to obtain detailed information.
In 2022, Cretignier and his team noticed a regular fluctuation in the star's light. This fluctuation may have been caused by the gravitational effect the planet exerts on the star. However, the signal was weak and more observations were needed for definitive results.
Since the exact diameter of the planet is unknown, its density cannot be calculated. If it has a small radius, it could be a rocky super-Earth. However, if it has a large radius, there is also a possibility that it is a gaseous mini-Neptune. Scientists hope to determine whether this planet is habitable with future observations. Cretignier stated that HD 20794 d is one of the closest potentially habitable planets to Earth and that it will attract great interest in the scientific world.
