Flying cars tested: 5 times faster than a taxi

The SD-05, one of the first examples of flying cars considered to be among the technologies that could revolutionize urban transportation in Japan, performed successfully in the sky for approximately 3.5 minutes during a test held over Tokyo Bay, one of the symbols of the capital, Tokyo. While the domestic company SkyDrive undertook its development, major industry names such as Mitsubishi Estate and Kanematsu also took part in the exhibition organization.
During the test, the vehicle, equipped with electric vertical take-off and landing capabilities, received positive comments from spectators thanks to its compact structure and quietness. The demonstration flight of the SD-05 brought it to the forefront of the list of pioneering technologies developed to address chronic transportation problems in Japan's metropolises.
Looking at the technical details of the flying car; the cabin with a three-passenger capacity, 12 battery-powered propellers, and a maximum flight range of 40 kilometers stand out. The ability of the SD-05 to easily take off and land in narrow spaces such as rooftop ports, shopping mall parking lots, or station squares is also among the design's significant advantages.
In a statement made after the test, SkyDrive's top executive Fukuzawa Tomohiro emphasized that these innovative vehicles would radically change public transportation habits. Tomohiro painted an ambitious picture of the future, stating that "with the entry of flying cars into service, travel speed will increase by 4 to 5 times compared to traditional taxis."
According to the Japanese company's plans, it is aimed for the SD-05 to begin commercial use in 2028, following the completion of the necessary certification processes. With the vehicle's deployment, it is expected that traffic congestion in major cities and the pressure created by public transportation will be significantly reduced.
Developers state that thanks to its compact dimensions, the SD-05 can be used effectively in narrow spaces where classic aircraft cannot enter and will open the doors to a new era in urban transportation. With this breakthrough, Japan aims to become one of the world's leading countries in smart transportation systems and to move city life into the skies.
