Google's AI assistant Gemini surpasses 1 billion monthly users, becomes company's fastest-growing product

Google’s AI assistant, Gemini, has crossed the 1 billion monthly active user threshold. According to a blog post published by the company, this milestone makes Gemini the fastest-growing product in Google’s history.

The announced figure comes shortly after the 950 million monthly user level reported by Google in its most recent earnings period. With this, Gemini has made its competition with OpenAI’s ChatGPT in the AI assistant market more visible. ChatGPT was also reported to have surpassed the 1 billion monthly active user threshold in May.

Google also shared data regarding user habits. According to the company, 63 percent of Gemini users provide their prompts via voice rather than typing. Additionally, one in every five interactions with Gemini involves screen sharing and live camera footage.

IMAGE GENERATION AND PLATFORM USAGE STAND OUT

Image generation stands out among Gemini’s use cases. Google stated that 150 million images are generated daily through the AI assistant, noting that the tool is increasingly being used, particularly among small businesses.

According to data shared by the company, Apple users also play a significant role in Gemini’s growth. More than 100 million of the monthly active users come from the Apple ecosystem. Google also reported that macOS users provide prompts approximately twice as often as users on other platforms.

Google launched Gemini in 2024. The AI assistant was later integrated into web browsers, Android phones, and Google Workspace products, including Drive, Docs, and Sheets.

Competition in the AI assistant market is not limited to Google and OpenAI. While Anthropic’s Claude assistant remains behind Gemini and ChatGPT in terms of user numbers, it continues to grow rapidly. According to data reported by Reuters, Claude had 56 million monthly active users worldwide as of the second quarter of this year.

Google shares saw a decline on the day the growth data for Gemini was announced. The company’s shares fell 3.4 percent on August 12 to $343.89. Despite this, Google shares maintain a 9.6 percent increase for the year overall.
