The European Union's new regulations on political advertising have prompted action from tech giants. Meta has announced that it will stop the sale and display of political advertisements on its Facebook and Instagram platforms starting in October. This decision was made within the scope of the European Union's Transparency and Targeting of Political Advertising (TTPA) regulation, adopted in 2024.
Meta stated that these regulations create “unmanageable complexity and legal uncertainty” within the company's systems. The TTPA mandates that political advertisements be clearly labeled, with sponsor information and the specific election or referendum to which the ad relates clearly stated. Furthermore, advertising costs and the targeting methods used must also be disclosed. While the use of personal data is permitted only with explicit consent, the processing of sensitive data for targeting purposes is prohibited.
GOOGLE'S SIMILAR MOVE
Google has also taken a similar step, announcing that it will stop selling political ads in the European Union by October. The company stated that this law brings “significant operational challenges and legal uncertainty.” Experts predict that this practice could become widespread globally in the future.
