Social media giant Meta has collaborated with IBM to establish the AI Alliance, an industry organization that supports open-source software in artificial intelligence.
'AI ALLIANCE' BORN FROM COLLABORATION
Concerns regarding the development and safety of artificial intelligence continue to grow rapidly due to a lack of regulation. The latest industry-led initiative to address this has come from Meta and IBM. The two companies have launched an organization called the AI Alliance.
Members of the AI Alliance will initially form working groups, a governing board, and a technical oversight committee to focus on areas such as AI "trust and verification" metrics, hardware and infrastructure that support AI training, and open-source AI models and frameworks. They will also establish project standards and guidelines, and subsequently plan to partner with significant existing initiatives from governments, non-profit organizations, and civil society groups that are doing valuable and aligned work in the field of AI.
MULTIPLE FACTORS TARGETED
The mission of the AI Alliance is defined as "fostering an open community and enabling developers and researchers to accelerate responsible innovation in AI, while ensuring scientific rigor, trust, safety, security, diversity, and economic competitiveness."
The use of open source can be defined as the cornerstone of the AI Alliance.

Nick Clegg, Meta's President of Global Affairs, said regarding safety efforts in AI: "With the AI Alliance, we will enable more people to play a role in the development of AI, develop innovative products, and work on safety. The AI Alliance brings together researchers, developers, and companies to share tools and information that can help us all make progress on various issues, especially safety. We look forward to working with our partners to advance the state-of-the-art in AI and help everyone develop responsibly."
More than 50 organizations and educational institutions worldwide, including Intel, NASA, the Cleveland Clinic, and Yale University, are joining Meta and IBM in this initiative.
