According to a new study published in the journal Nature Microbiology, corpses exhibit significant similarities in the context of microbial networks. Researchers hope that this discovery can be used in homicide investigations to determine the time of death and make significant contributions to solving murders.
Dr. Jessica Metcalf, an associate professor of microbiology and ecology at Colorado State University and author of the paper, stated in a press release, "It is truly wonderful to confirm the presence of these microbes that emerge to decompose the remains of living things. I hope we are opening a new field in ecological research."
In the study conducted on 36 cadavers, how microbiomes change at different times during the decomposition process was measured. Metcalf said, "Regardless of any outdoor variable you can think of, we see similar microbes arriving at similar times during decomposition." This finding has significant implications for forensic science, as these microbes could help determine more precisely how long a body has been dead.
Researchers estimate that these microbes are carried to corpses by insects that arrive to feed and lay eggs. The paper's author, Dr. Jessica Metcalf, shares this view.
On the other hand, David Carter, a professor of forensic sciences at Chaminade University in Honolulu and co-author of the paper, stated in a press release, "When it comes to investigating death events, there are very few types of physical evidence that you can guarantee will be found at every crime scene. Fingerprints, bloodstains, or camera footage may not always be available, but microbes will always be there..."
Scientists hope that these findings can be used not only in forensic investigations but also in microbial ecology research and agriculture.
