WhatsApp Head Will Cathcart stated that in countries where the mobile application is banned, "tens of millions of people" are secretly accessing WhatsApp using temporary technical workarounds.

In countries such as Iran, North Korea, and Syria, where many Western mobile applications are prohibited, WhatsApp has also been rendered unusable. Most recently, China was added to the list of countries banning WhatsApp last month.

In other countries such as Qatar, Egypt, Jordan, and the United Arab Emirates, certain features of the application, such as voice calling, are restricted. However, WhatsApp is able to detect the real location of its users through their registered phone numbers.

In an interview with the BBC, WhatsApp Head Will Cathcart stated that they have observed that "tens of millions of people" are still connecting to WhatsApp in some countries where it is blocked.
