New photoreactor that produces hydrogen without solar electricity introduced
An innovative panel developed in Germany can produce green hydrogen directly using sunlight and water; it is expected to offer significant advantages in energy and production costs.

A technology startup supported by the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), one of Germany's leading research institutions, has unveiled a new generation of solar panel prototypes at the Hannover Messe trade fair that can produce hydrogen without the need for electrical energy, unlike traditional processes. These modular photoreactors, developed by the company Photreon, can obtain green hydrogen solely through the interaction of sunlight and water.
The most striking feature of the prototype is that it performs the two-stage process—which typically requires the conversion of sunlight into electricity by classic solar panels followed by the electrolysis of water—in a single step thanks to a method called "photocatalysis." Through this method, the system significantly reduces both technical complexity and production costs.
Thanks to a special geometry inside the panel, for which a patent application has been filed, optimal absorption of sunlight is ensured; furthermore, the generated hydrogen gas can be quickly evacuated from within the system. In this respect, efficient and safe gas management is achieved.
Designed with standard parts to be suitable for mass production, the modular panels are said to be scalable, capable of both fitting roof applications for individual use and being installed in large industrial areas. This infrastructure aims to provide on-site production convenience for small and medium-sized manufacturing facilities, as well as the food and metal sectors, particularly in regions where transporting hydrogen is difficult.
Among the advantages offered by the new system is the acceleration of the industry's sustainable transformation by reducing dependence on external energy. This technology, which is expected to become widespread at different scales in the near future, is considered an important alternative for sectors producing with clean energy sources.
