Officially announced: Here is Turkey's new domain name

Internet addresses with the 'com.tr' extension used in Turkey are becoming a thing of the past. Deputy Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Ömer Fatih Sayan made the announcement. Turkey's new domain name, which will be made available for allocation by TRABIS (.tr Network Information System), will be ".tr".

Domain names used on websites around the world are managed by an international organization known as IANA. However, registration procedures for country-code domain names are determined by the respective country.

ANNOUNCED AS "OUR NATIONAL DOMAIN NAME"

According to the statement made by Deputy Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Ömer Fatih Sayan, 'com.tr' extension domain names will no longer be used in Turkey. Minister Sayan announced the new domain name extension to be used in Turkey by calling it "our national domain name".

Sayan used the following expressions:

"We are adding a new one to the TR-extension domain names. Our country's new domain name, which will be made available for allocation by TRABIS (.tr Network Information System), is: “a.tr”. For example, easy and prestigious domain names like "fatih.tr" can now be registered. In this context, we came together with our TRABIS stakeholders at an information meeting today. We shared information regarding the responsibilities in the “a.tr” transition process. With the innovations we have made in this field, we are standing out in global competition. Our national domain name, “.tr”, is taking firm steps toward becoming a global brand."

WHEN WILL THE TRANSITION TO THE NEW DOMAIN NAME TAKE PLACE?

Following the latest announcement, questions such as how to get a .tr domain name and how much a .tr domain name costs have started to be asked. Turkey's new internet domain name, “a.tr”, will be managed by TRABIS (TR Network Information System). The new domain name extension will allow websites and online services to be accessed with easier and shorter addresses.

It was stated that the new “.tr” extension entered the testing process as of September 13, but it is not possible to make allocations individually or corporately in the initial process. After the tests are completed, sites with the “com.tr” extension will be transitioned to the “a.tr” system. Free allocation will be provided for these domain names to “.tr”.
