PlayStation 2's 26-year-old MechaCon security chip cracked via reverse engineering

Retro hardware enthusiast DiscoStarslayer has gained access to the contents of the MechaCon chip, which manages the PS2's optical drive and protection systems.

The "MechaCon" security chip, codenamed CXP102064, long considered one of the most difficult parts of the PlayStation 2's hardware to crack, has been bypassed via reverse engineering 26 years after the console's release.

Canadian retro hardware enthusiast DiscoStarslayer managed to access the chip's contents after a four-year effort. MechaCon is known as one of the critical components in the original PS2 that manages the operation of the optical drive and anti-piracy protection mechanisms.

The study utilized methods such as chemical decapping, optical data dumping, and microscopic examination of silicon circuits. At the end of the process, a security vulnerability was identified that allows data on the chip to be exported via software.

Announcing the development on the X platform, DiscoStarslayer also thanked their colleague Libby, who played a role in finding the vulnerability that enabled access to the chip's contents.

The MechaCon chip played a central role in the PlayStation 2's optical drive and security mechanisms.

Its impact is not limited to the console

The MechaCon chip was not used solely in the PlayStation 2. This component, which is also present in some PS2-based arcade systems, is found in Namco's System 246 and System 256 platforms, as well as Konami's Python 1 systems. Therefore, it is considered that the impact of this reverse engineering work will not be limited to home consoles.

Better documentation of the chip's operating principles could provide new conveniences for PS2 emulation projects and independent software development efforts. It is also noted that it could pave the way for the development of more advanced optical drive emulators that have been long awaited.

While the PlayStation 2 continues to be one of the most discussed pieces of hardware in gaming history, this work on MechaCon is seen as a significant technical milestone in the fields of retro game preservation, hardware archiving, and emulation.
