Samsung unveiled its own generative AI model, called Samsung Gauss, at an AI-focused event held at its R&D campus (Samsung Research) in Seoul.
The company named the AI model after mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss, who established the Normal Distribution Theory (Gaussian), which is considered the backbone of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) technologies. Samsung Gauss is also expected to be featured in the Galaxy S24 series.
IT WILL BE LIKE THE GENERATIVE AI TOOLS WE KNOW
According to details reported by Donanımhaber, Samsung Gauss, developed by Samsung Research, demonstrates the firm's vision for generative AI and its desire to keep up with the competition. Samsung Gauss is currently being used internally by company employees, but it will soon be offered to the general public through future products. In general, it will offer features similar to ChatGPT, Bard, and Bing AI.
Samsung Gauss incorporates the Samsung Gauss Language, Gauss Code, and Gauss Image systems. Features based on these generative AI models are expected to be available in the Galaxy S24 series, which is slated for release in January 2024.
Samsung Gauss Language will be a model that understands human language and generates responses.
The model will assist with tasks such as drafting emails, editing and summarizing documents, translating languages, and writing.
In this capacity, it can also be used to offer smarter device controls when applied to Samsung's products. It can run both on cloud servers and on edge devices (phones, tablets, and PCs).
Samsung Gauss Code, as the name suggests, will be a model specialized in coding languages. It is stated to have a code assistant called 'code.i' that will be used internally by Samsung. The model, which will be used for fast and easy software development through an interactive interface, supports code description and test scenario generation.
Samsung Gauss Image, again as the name suggests, aims to generate and edit images. Gauss Image can change the style of an image, convert low-resolution images into high-resolution ones, and add new scenes to an existing image. It can also create entirely new images with just a small text description, similar to DALL-E and Midjourney.
Samsung Gauss is seen as a very rich model. However, perhaps its most important detail is that it can run internally on the device. Eliminating the latency caused by cloud communication will speed up prompts while also providing a more personal and secure user experience. For these reasons, Samsung may use the Gauss AI in the Galaxy S24 series and highlight it as a key selling point.
Samsung has also established an AI Red Team based on AI ethics principles. This team will internally monitor privacy and security issues at various stages of AI, from data collection to result generation.
