Tests begin at Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant: Main equipment to be commissioned
The process of commissioning the main equipment at the pump station for Unit 1 of the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) has begun. The station will provide water to all of the plant's cooling systems and is equipped with four high-capacity pump units.

It has been reported that the Akkuyu NPP, built by the Russian State Nuclear Energy Corporation Rosatom, is moving into the testing phase for Unit 1. The pumps integrated into the unit are stated to have the capacity to transfer 260,000 cubic meters of water per hour into the system. The cooling water pumping units and the pumps that will supply the backup diesel power plants have undergone various load tests.
The design of the pump station was planned to be resistant to external factors such as floods and tsunamis. The main equipment is placed 21 meters below ground level, while the electric motors are positioned 5 meters below ground.
Akkuyu Nuclear JSC General Manager Sergey Butckikh stated the following in his announcement:
'Construction and assembly work at the pump station has been completed. We have moved to the commissioning phase of the main equipment. These pumps are critical for the smooth operation of all the plant's cooling systems.'
The plant's cooling needs will be met with water taken from the Mediterranean. A portion of the water will undergo a desalination process. A complex consisting of offshore and onshore hydraulic structures is being built for this process. The complex has a detailed infrastructure including four pump stations, a drainage channel, and water intake structures.
Butckikh added the following to his words:
'These pumps will support the reliable operation of the reactor and turbine units by providing water to all cooling systems of the power unit. The pump station was developed in accordance with modern safety standards and was completed through the coordinated work of Turkish-Russian engineering teams.'
ACTIVITIES AT AKKUYU NPP
It was stated that the main cooling pumps are positioned 21 meters below ground level, while the 6500 kW electric motors are located at a depth of 5 meters. It was conveyed that this design was developed to protect the station against floods, tsunamis, and other external factors.
Commissioning experts have completed the test work for the pump units and are checking the performance of the equipment. This phase is of great importance for the reliable operation of the plant.
Experts are conducting load-testing work on the pump units at the plant and checking the system's operating parameters. It was reported that the construction of a comprehensive hydraulic complex, which includes four pump stations, drainage channels, siphon wells, and water intake structures, is continuing in order to support the water cooling system of the Akkuyu NPP.
