According to a report by The New Yorker, it is estimated that ChatGPT uses this much electricity to respond to approximately 200 million requests per day. This figure is 17,000 times higher than the daily electricity consumption of an average American home.

Warnings are being issued that if artificial intelligence is adopted more widely, energy consumption could increase significantly. According to calculations by data scientist Alex de Vries, if Google were to integrate generative artificial intelligence technology into every search, it could consume nearly 29 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity per year. This represents an amount greater than the annual electricity consumption of many countries.
Stating that artificial intelligence servers consume significant amounts of energy, De Vries estimates, based on data provided by Nvidia, that the sector could consume between 85 and 134 terawatt-hours of electricity per year by 2027.
