When and where to watch the 2025 Eta Aquarid meteor shower?

The Eta Aquarid meteor shower is caused by fragments breaking off from Halley's Comet and entering Earth's atmosphere. According to NASA, this meteor shower is notable for its fast-moving meteors and long, bright trails. Reaching its peak on May 5 and 6, this event can be observed in dark areas with up to 50 meteors per hour.

While the best views are expected in the Southern Hemisphere, observers in the Northern Hemisphere can also see up to 10 meteors per hour in areas away from light pollution.

In Turkey, this celestial spectacle can also be witnessed at the same hours, between 03:00 in the early morning and sunrise.

To best view the meteor shower, it is recommended that observers allow their eyes to adjust to the darkness for at least 30 minutes. Since the meteors move very quickly, there is no need to use a telescope or binoculars. The Eta Aquarid shower will continue to taper off until the end of May.

This meteor shower occurs as Earth passes through the dusty trail left behind by Halley's Comet. These small particles enter Earth's atmosphere at a speed of 65 kilometers per hour, creating intense friction, which results in bright meteor streaks. Sometimes, larger pieces can also enter the atmosphere and create fireballs.

There will be other celestial events in May besides the Eta Aquarids.

A full moon will be observable on May 12, and a new moon on May 27. Additionally, between May 22-24, the Moon, Venus, and Mars will come together in the West after sunset.
