YouTube ban coming for children
Having previously blocked access to platforms such as Instagram and TikTok, Australia has now banned YouTube as well, determining that children are most frequently exposed to harmful content through this platform.

Australia has expanded its social media bans for children under 16, adding YouTube to its list of prohibited platforms.
The Canberra administration, which banned access to platforms such as Instagram, X, TikTok, Facebook, and Snapchat for those under 16 last year, had initially kept YouTube outside the scope of the ban, citing its contributions to education and its entertainment value. However, authorities have now included the platform in the ban after recent research identified YouTube as the platform where children most frequently encounter harmful content.
LEGAL PROCESS TO BEGIN
Australia had previously announced that social media platforms would face fines of up to 33 million dollars if they failed to enforce age restrictions. Alphabet, the parent company of YouTube, announced that it would challenge the decision and initiate a legal process.
