A 40-year wait comes to an end: The winner of the Copa del Rey has been decided!

Athletic Bilbao and Real Mallorca faced off in the final of the Copa del Rey.

In the match played at the Cartuja Olympic Stadium in Seville, Real Mallorca finished the first half with a 1-0 lead thanks to a goal by Dani Rodriguez in the 21st minute.

Athletic Bilbao equalized in the 50th minute of the second half with a goal from Oihan Sancet. Although they were more effective in attack compared to their opponent, they were unable to succeed in their final attempts, and the match ended 1-1 in regular time, leading to extra time.

As the deadlock remained during extra time, the winner of the cup was decided by a penalty shootout.

Securing a 4-2 advantage over their opponent in the penalties, Athletic Bilbao took the cup to their trophy cabinet after 40 years with a 5-3 score at the end of the match.

Although Athletic Bilbao is the second club to have won the Copa del Rey the most, having earned the title of the first team to win it in 1903, they had last lifted the trophy in the 1983-1984 season.

Real Mallorca, which has won the Copa del Rey only once in its history (in the 2002-2003 season), played in its 4th final.

Athletic Bilbao, which received the cup from King Felipe VI, took the Copa del Rey to their trophy cabinet for the 24th time in club history.

Barcelona, which has won the Copa del Rey the most with 31 titles, is followed by Athletic Bilbao (24) and Real Madrid (20).
