A first in 90 years: The Super Cup match where Fenerbahçe walked off the pitch makes history

Fenerbahçe, having decided to field its U19 team for the Super Cup match against Galatasaray, walked off the pitch in the 2nd minute of the game.

Galatasaray took a 1-0 lead in the 50th second with a goal by Mauro Icardi, and the kickoff for the goal was not taken. Fenerbahçe Board Member Ahmet Ketenci called the team to the locker room, and referee Volkan Bayarslan abandoned the match.

While the Fenerbahçe players headed to the locker room, the Galatasaray players celebrated on the pitch.

The ball remained in play for a total of 50 seconds from the opening kickoff, a duration that also goes down in history as one of the shortest matches in world football history.

FENERBAHÇE PLAYERS DID NOT TOUCH THE BALL

In the match where Dries Mertens took the opening kickoff, Galatasaray completed a total of 16 passes, while the Fenerbahçe players were unable to touch the ball.

The player who touched the ball the most in the match was Abdülkerim Bardakcı with 5 touches. The national player was followed by Nelsson, who made 4 passes. Lucas Torreira met the ball 2 times, while Berkan Kutlu, Kaan Ayhan, Derrick Köhn, Barış Alper Yılmaz, and Mauro Icardi each touched the ball once.

Barış Alper, who headed the ball down for Icardi's goal, was also the only player in the match to touch the ball with his head.

Icardi put his team ahead in his first encounter with the ball, and this goal was also the final moment the ball was touched in the match.

In the Yellow-Red team, the only player other than goalkeeper Muslera who did not touch the ball was Kerem Aktürkoğlu.

ICARDI SCORED THE EARLIEST GOAL IN THE ETERNAL RIVALRY

A first occurred yesterday in the 115-year rivalry that began on January 17, 1909, with a match played at a place called "Papazın Çayırı" (Priest's Meadow), which Galatasaray won 2-0.

Mauro Icardi, who found the net for Fenerbahçe in the 50th second, became the player to score the earliest goal in the eternal rivalry.

The goal scored by Mirza Seydic, who played for Galatasaray in the league match held at Ali Sami Yen Stadium on April 8, 1984, in the 55th second, held the title of the fastest goal scored in matches between the two teams. The two teams had left that match with a 1-1 draw.

FOR THE SECOND TIME IN 90 YEARS, A DERBY WAS ABANDONED

This is the second time in the matches played between the two teams to date that a game has been abandoned. In the 115-year rivalry of the eternal rivals, the match they played in the Istanbul League on February 23, 1934, was also abandoned.

The events escalated when spectators in the stands joined the fight that started in the 60th minute of the match at Taksim Stadium, following a kick by Galatasaray's Kadri Dağ to Fenerbahçe's M. Reşat Nayir, and Fenerbahçe's Fikret Arıcan, who ran towards Kadri, being grabbed and thrown to the sidelines by Galatasaray's Tevfik.

Following the abandoned match, the "Regional Football Committee" convened and issued long-term suspensions to a total of 17 players, 9 from Fenerbahçe and 8 from Galatasaray.

90 years after this incident, a Galatasaray-Fenerbahçe match has been abandoned once again.

THE THIRD ABANDONED MATCH FOR FENERBAHÇE IN CUP COMPETITIONS

With the abandonment of the Super Cup match, it marks the third time a Fenerbahçe match has not been completed, including two in the Turkish Cup.

In the 1997-1998 season Turkish Cup quarter-final second leg match, which was continuing with Trabzonspor leading 1-0, an object thrown from the stands hit coach Otto Bariç, and the Croatian manager was taken to the hospital by ambulance. Following the situation, the Yellow-Navy players went to the locker room and did not continue the match.

Following the match, the TFF declared Trabzonspor the winner by a 3-0 forfeit and banned Fenerbahçe from the Turkish Cup for 1 year.

A similar situation occurred this time in a Turkish Cup match where Fenerbahçe was the host.

The 2017-2018 season Turkish Cup semi-final second leg match between Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş at Ülker Stadium was also abandoned in the 55th minute because objects thrown from the stands hit the Black-White team's coach Şenol Güneş.

While Şenol Güneş was taken to the hospital following the events, the match referee Mete Kalkavan abandoned the match.

The Turkish Football Federation decided that the match should be played from where it left off behind closed doors, but Beşiktaş announced that they would not take the pitch.

Following the Black-White team's implementation of this decision, Fenerbahçe was declared the winner by a 3-0 forfeit. Beşiktaş also received a 1-year ban from the Turkish Cup.
